Mechanical Engineering Chair’s Welcome

Mechanical Engineering Chair’s Welcome

Welcome to the Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME), one of five departments within the Bourns College of Engineering (BCOE) at UC Riverside (UCR), and home to 17 faculty members, 58 graduate students and 523 undergraduate students. Although barely 14 years old, the prominence of our department is rising quickly, as evidenced in part by recent National Research Council and US News & World Report rankings, which place our program in the first and second quartile, respectively, of all ME graduate programs in the nation. "

Our strong ABET-accredited undergraduate program emphasizes engineering fundamentals coupled with hands-on engineering design and analysis. Our curriculum recognizes that engineering is a social enterprise by emphasizing ethics, engineering economics, technical communication, and teamwork. It also provides significant exposure to the humanities and the social sciences to ensure that our graduates appreciate the impact of engineering on society. Our curriculum is regularly reviewed by the faculty and the department’s Board of Advisors, which is comprised of dedicated representatives from industry and academia. This process ensures that the curriculum best reflects the current needs of industry and is responsive to evolving employment trends.

Our faculty members are dedicated teachers who value interaction with students beyond the classroom. As part of our commitment to teaching, we offer a unique program in which undergraduates can earn credit towards their degree by participating in research conducted by our faculty. We are proud that over 20% of our undergraduates take advantage of this program, which is designed to emphasize the relationship between research and education, as well as better-prepare our students for subsequent graduate studies and eventual careers in research and development.

Our faculty are leaders in their respective fields, and their research is funded by a diverse set of federal, state, and local agencies, industrial sponsors, and foundations1. Many have been honored with prestigious national and international awards and a number of our faculty also serve as Editors and/or Editorial Board Members of prominent journals2. In broad terms, we coalesce around four core areas of research: a) thermal and fluid sciences; b) mechanics and materials; c) biosensors and biomedical applications; and d) information, computation, and design. However, together with faculty from other departments, our faculty form seven multi-disciplinary research clusters to provide advanced education in a major area of study, combined with cutting-edge research3. For the same reason, many of our faculty are also affiliated with multiple Centers and Programs across campus4. Within this brochure, you will find a brief sampling of current research efforts within the department, all of which reflect the novel and multi-disciplinary character of the research being undertaken by our faculty. Thanks to this rich academic environment, our graduates are well-prepared to pursue successful careers in academia, federal research facilities, and high-tech companies.

Additional information on our educational and research programs can be found at We also welcome you to visit the department to meet our faculty and students, and learn more about the unique environment we have created.
